A Plea for Help During a Cholera Crisis

A Plea for Help During a Cholera Crisis

Hello Friends and Supporters,
Disaster has come upon our communities through the scourge of cholera. When this outbreak started,
we treated several patients with IVs and sent them to another clinic that was some distance away as we
believed that clinic was well equipped, and they would receive the care they needed. Unfortunately,
several of them died and so we determined that providing both immediate and ongoing care by our
local clinic was needed.
Consequently, TGSF now treats our cholera patients locally and the word is out, “go to The Good
Shepherd Foundation clinic and you will get wonderful care and live.” How could we turn them away?
Patients show up at all hours of the day and throughout the night. Our staff is quite overwhelmed.
In addition, the cholera outbreak is taking us to financial depletion at an alarming rate and we are only
at the tip of the spear of this crisis.
We now have Dr. Steve on our team 3 days a week. Treating cholera has an elevated medical supply cost
for IVs and antibiotics.  Remember when you last needed antibiotics?  You were in pain and suffering,
and it only took you a phone call to get what you needed. In Haiti, we are the front line of defense for
the 20 communities we serve, so we have chosen to provide good care to those in need.
How can you help? We need an infusion of money to resource the clinic appropriately for providing
lifesaving care. The cost is amplified, from an average of $7 per person per treatment to $50 per person
with cholera. At the current expenditure to meet the need of desperately sick people we will be out of
funding by the end of December. This means all the medicine and care for the skin diseases, diabetes,
high blood pressure, infections, UTIs etc. that our communities depend on will stop abruptly.
Please help us rise up to face this urgent need and stop this deadly pestilence from ravaging families and
communities. Give the gift of life this holiday season to those who receive so little and yet are filled with
hope and joy in the face of adversity. You can donate on the website listed below or mail a check to The
Good Shepherd Foundation, 1127 Royal Palm Beach Blvd, Royal Palm Beach, FL 33411.
Come be light and salt in this forgotten small part of the world giving these people hope that they are
not alone in these dark times and will get the care they need to help them get through this health crisis.
We can only do this with your financial support and we also ask you to share this need with your church
groups, garden clubs, Civic groups or any other organizations that might want to partner with us at this
time of dire need.  For questions, please contact Linda McGurn at 860-805-1006
